Flesh grinding and bone crushing grindcore with some hints of death metal is
delivered to us by the Italian band Balatonizer. 32 songs are being fired
(27 real songs so to speak, and five intermezzos) straight in your face,
without mercy. According to the record label, the demos of Balatonizer
have sold more than 14 000 copies throughout Southern Europe. Impressive.
They've also toured some with Cripple Bastards and Melt Banana. I've never
heard of those two bands, but I'm guessing that they play in the same division
all three. Now I've taken the time to review their first full-length album that
goes under the title of "Occlused In Ottusity" and it's a pretty standard release.
You know the drill; buzzing guitars, machine-gun drumming, almost inhumane vocals,
uncompromising bass brutality and of course; short but blasting songs. Speaking of
the drumming, it sounds like a drum machine is used, but I'm not quite sure though.
Whatever, what I do know is that I'm not too impressed with this CD to be honest.
The music is (as you might expect) furious, intense and brutal but at times they also
tries to vary the tempo, with good result - I might add. Now I have a little confession
to make here, folks. I've never been a huge fan of grindcore, and I seriously doubt
that I ever will be. Mainly because many band fails to add something of their own to
the field, thus making the whole thing a little less interesting. Of course, that can
be said about every genre, right? True, but I still consider it a fact that grindcore
as a genre is more or less dead. It's apparent from the first listen that these guys
play the music they love, though. I don't consider this release as bad at all, but I
don't really recommend it either.
Allow me to end this review by stating what most of you already know; this release is not for the weak hearted.
