Grindead webzine

For those not familiar with Balatonizer already (just like I previously wasn't), Balatonzier are a trio based in Palermo,Italy who describe their style as "VULGAR-DEATH-GRIND", certainly a term which sparked my interest first off. This cd is packaged amazingly, totally pro printed booklets, a bio sheet, cd complete with cdrom video. If only more bands would take this initiative haha! Great artwork and a great concept. Balatonizer seem to be a band that are pretty serious about what they're doing, a whole lot of effort has gone into this release, and its good to see a band with the whole package so to speak..

This cd contains 32 tracks from Balatonizers full length "Occlused in Ottusity", and if anyone can understand what this title means, please let me know because I have no idea.

Balatonizer plays some sort of mid-tempo semi guttural death metal. Slightly groovy, and definitely an oldschool influence, but with the added nu-er approach of the drum machine.

In terms of riffs and sound, some comparable bands would be CorpsefuckingArt (not surprisingly), Monstrosity with fisher, and you get the drill. There are some faster grindier beats in this recording but really not enough of it to class it as any type of grindcore in my opinion.

Listening right the way through this cd can get kinda difficult, 32 tracks of this is just way too much for me, I found it hard to concentrate without skipping tracks and although it wasn't my cup of tea from the word go, I really couldn't see a lot of anything in it, and definitely couldn't see where the vulgar grind. The cd seems to be a lot of the same stuff, mid tempo to fast beats, guttural vocals in most parts, typical tech death metal riffs. These guys are probably really good musicians, but as we all know sometimes good musicianship doesn't necessarily render brilliant creativity or originality, and the drum machine gives it a weird edge.

Just reading through this bio sheet that was included, I came across an interesting metaphor (or bad translation) for their music, saying: "WE ARE LIKE A ITALIAN EXTRASTRONG COFFEE THAT EMIT RAGE AND POWER, STUFFED OF OUR FUNDAMENTAL IRONICAL VEIN". Hmmm * Really restraining myself here*- and "TRACKS OF THE LENGTH OF MAX 1 MINUTE THROWED ON PUBLIC LIKE STONES DURING A VULCAN'S ERUPTION, 30 MINUTES OF SONIC EARTHQUAKE THAT SWEPT OUT EVERYTHING WITH A CIRCULAR MOTION SIMILAR TO OUR HEADBANGINGŒ". If only this album lived up to such amusing hype! Well, if I were to use a simile for Balatonizer, this band was kind of like an EXTREMELY AVERAGE COFFEE THAT EMIT TECHNICAL RIFFS OF NO PROGRESSION AND NO SUBSTANCE, JUST A REALLY FIRM DEATH METAL INFLUENCE THROWED UPON THE PUBLIC LIKE A DROP IN THE ALREADY WIDE OCEAN OF GENERIC DEATH METAL.

To conclude, Occlused in Ottusity struck me as the kind that's been done a hundred times before, a hundred times better, with a lot of it leaving me uninterested. Needless to say, I found little quality in this album really; it was uninspiring death metal with guttural vocals that didn't sway me at all. Occulsed in Ottusity is not something I'd categorize as overly BAD; (after all this is only one persons opinion), but I just found it to be quite mediocre and boring. This album gets 1.5/5, loads of room for development here guys, a cool theme that's really well organised, but not much intensity to back it up with.
